He was probably related to James Donaldson (fl. 1794),〔Gordon Goodwin. ''Donaldson, James (fl.1794),'' in ''Dictionary of National Biography, 1885-1900'', Volume 15.〕 writer on agriculture and land surveyor from Dundee, whose subjects he made his own.
